Kowa Supporting Driverless Innovation: Formula Student Team Valencia
At Kowa Lenses, we are passionate about supporting cutting-edge innovations, especially those that involve the next generation of engineers. One of our exciting partnerships is with the Formula Student team from Valencia, Spain, where university students design, build, and race their very own driverless Formula 1 cars. These competitions, held worldwide, allow students to showcase their technical skills and push the boundaries of autonomous vehicle technology.
Recently, our Sales & Marketing Manager, Daniel Van de Sandt, had the opportunity to sit down with the head of the autonomous system from the Valencia team, José Manuel García Sánchez, to discuss their project and how Kowa lenses play a crucial role in their success.

Formula Student is an international competition where university teams design, manufacture, and race Formula 1-style cars, often focusing on autonomous driving systems. These events, held in various countries such as Germany, Spain, and Italy, challenge students to develop their engineering skills while working in a high-pressure, real-world environment. As the head of the autonomous system explained, the competition offers an invaluable opportunity for students to hone their skills, preparing them for their future careers in engineering.
One of the competition's most exciting elements is the driverless category. Here, students must design and implement advanced perception, estimation, and control systems, creating a pipeline that allows their cars to autonomously navigate the track. This system relies heavily on machine vision technology, making high-quality camera lenses and image sensors essential.

In the driverless competition, machine vision is critical for navigating the course. The track is marked with yellow and blue cones, which the vehicle must detect and interpret to drive autonomously. The perception system the team developed relies on cameras and LiDAR sensors to identify these cones and process the information in real-time. Here, Kowa lenses come into play.
The Valencia team was facing challenges with image quality and field of view in previous seasons. As the head of the autonomous system noted, the limited field of view and subpar image resolution hindered their machine learning systems from accurately detecting and classifying objects on the track. This is when they turned to Kowa for a solution.

The team chose Kowa lenses due to their exceptional image quality and superior optical performance. With our lenses, the team was able to significantly improve the clarity of the images captured by their cameras, which, in turn, enhanced the accuracy of their machine learning algorithms. As a result, the team's perception system became much more reliable, leading to fewer errors in the car's estimations and better overall performance on the track.
"We saw a significant improvement when we upgraded to Kowa lenses," explained the head of the autonomous system. "The wider field of view and higher image quality allowed us to improve our perception and control systems, giving us a competitive edge in the races."

For the upcoming season, the Valencia team is working on several key improvements, including upgrading their car’s monocoque design and refining the perception and control systems. With the help of Kowa lenses, they aim to achieve even better performance in the dynamic events of the competition, where precise control and fast decision-making are paramount.
The team is optimistic about the new season, with high hopes of winning the prestigious driverless competition. As they continue to push the limits of autonomous driving technology, Kowa is proud to be a part of their journey, helping them achieve their vision through the power of high-quality optics.
